Struggling with Oily hair?

Oily hair can be a battle, and can lead to the desperate searching for answers on how to manage the constant look of greasy roots, with dry shampoos and back in the day even talcum powder to stretch out that wash day.

Our scalps are more complex than imagined with hair follicles, nerves, capillaries, muscles, sweat glands and sebaceous glands all providing a different role in supporting the health of our scalp and hair.

Our scalp microbiomes are thriving with microorganisms including bacteria, fungi and microorganisms, all essential for the scalp and hair growth health.

Sometimes we may experience repeated conditions like dandruff and/or oily hair.  This shows our microbiome may not be too happy.

An overgrowth of Malassezia yeast can lead to white flakes (dandruff) or greasy yellow flakes (seborrheic dermatitis) forming.  With these conditions can come itching, tingling, burning and soreness that can be a real nuisance.

Then there can be an overstimulation of the sebaceous glands that surround the hairs responsible for producing sebum on the scalp.

They can occur at once and at differing levels of severity, but overall knowing how to control whats happening on your scalp can help the long term management of these issues.  Seeing a Trichologist can help with getting the right hypothesis to ensure correct treatments are being used as some treatments can cause an overgrowth of yeast and some can over-dry the scalp.

Top Tips for Oily hair management!

1) Regular washing of hair.

Sounds obvious but generally people still worry they may be over washing their hair.  The truth is if your using quality products there is more benefit to increasing your washes.  Your scalp is skin after all and we wash our face and body skin very regularly.

2) Clean hairbrushes and combs regularly.

Keep from transferring oil and dirt back to your scalp by keeping your tools clean.

3) Refrain from over stimulating your scalp, try to break any habits of constantly running fingers through hair, you can be overstimulating already stimulated glands!

4) Avoid using oils on the scalp, opt for serums instead.  Oils increase yeast and can clog follicles if not shampooed off.  If using oils only leave on for 30 mins before shampooing off, serums are better absorbed into the scalp.

5) Niacinamide is good for controlling oil production, reducing inflammation and itching and oxidative stress.  After washing your hair add a few drops Niacinamide serum to your scalp and work in, be careful not to overdo it. Look for brands like the Ordinary that keep it natural and do not have lots of filling agents.

6) Use good quality shampoos and treatments.  I recommend Eufora urgent repair detox shampoo.  Based in Aloe and full of plant based ingredients like nettle, citrus limon peel extract and many more botanicals with antioxidants, antibacterial agents, amino acids and anti-inflammatory properities all designed to balance and regulate the scalp. This shampoos are highly concentrated and so only small amounts are needed.  Leave in contact with the scalp for 5 mins and rinse.

Follow with Eufora Nourish urgent repair revitalising treatment, this treatment can be applied to the scalp and left on for 5 mins or longer for a real cooling and soothing effect, and worked through ends for maximum moisturising of the hair shaft.

Eufora Nourish Beautifying serum can then be worked into a towel dried scalp to nourish the scalp while continuing anti bacterial and anti fungal effect.

7) Dry your scalp with a dryer, do not allow excess moisture to sit on the scalp, and always wash your hair after sweating, or wearing hats for long periods, and keep hats clean too!

8) Try to lay off the dry shampoo, it can clog the follicles and cause many problems with scalp health and hair growth.
